Rules of the Road

It is important for Team Managers to expose the team to the Rules of
the Road early in the year.  This newsletter will spotlight important
rules that teams need to know as they begin to solve Instant Challenges
and their Central Challenges.

Rule of the Week:

Foot Coverings:  All team members must wear shoes or foot coverings with reasonably impenetrable soles at all times.  This is to protect your performing team members from any undetected debris that may be on the floor.  (Rules of the
Road page 25)

Instant Challenge Tip of the Week

Remember most Instant Challenges are judged subjectively.  Instant Challenge scoring criteria may include but are not limited to:

  • Development of a Skit

*Conflict
*Resolution

  • Creativity of the solution

*Humor
*Risk

  • Character development

*Originality
*Display of emotions

  • Use of materials provided

*Creativity
*Multiplicity of uses
*Materials used in combination

Rules of the Road

It is important for Team Managers to expose the team to the Rules of
the Road early in the year.  This newsletter will spotlight important
rules that teams need to know as they begin to solve Instant Challenges
and their Central Challenges.

Rule of the Week:

Time Limit:  Each Challenge Presentation has a Time Limit.  The Time Limit means that your entire solution, including the set up of scenery and props, must take place within the stated time.  Teams may not go over time, but teams do not need to use all of their allotted time.  (Rules of the Road page 21)

Instant Challenge Tip of the Week

General tips for solving all instant challenges:

  1. Speak loudly and clearly.  If you can't be heard, it doesn't matter how creative your solution is.
  2. Know where the points are.  Listen carefully to where the largest number of points will be awarded and work from there.
  3. Know your team mates and their strengths.  Everyone has different areas in which they excel.
  4. Listen to the instructions carefully.  Ask questions if you're unclear about what is expected.  There are no stupid questions; just speak up.
  5. Time is very important.  Although the team should take responsibility for keeping track of time, you may ask how much time is remaining.
  6. The entire team should evaluate its performance, noting areas needing improvement.  Then do the challenge again.
  7. You will notice teamwork is very important in instant challenges.  Never argue with your teammmates while trying to solve your challenges.

Rules of the Road

It is important for Team Managers to expose the team to the Rules of
the Road early in the year.  This newsletter will spotlight important
rules that teams need to know as they begin to solve Instant Challenges
and their Central Challenges.

Rule of the Week:

Cost:  Each competitive Team Challenge except Private DI has an assigned budget or expense limit.  The total value of your solution may not be more than your Team Challenge Budget.  Check your Team Challenge for the Expense Limit.  Keep copies of your receipts with your paperwork in case you are asked to show how you arrived at your team's Expense Report figures.  Teams are expected to place a realistic value on used items.

Instant Challenge Tip of the Week

Make sure you follow the LAWS of Instant Challenge.

L - Listen carefully to all instructions:

  • What are the  time limits?
  • Are there penalties for certain actions?
  • Are there areas that can't be crossed or entered?
  • Listen for specific information.

A - Analyze

  • What are the characteristics of all materials provided?
  • Discuss various alternatives.
  • DON'T alter any material until a final decision has been made.
  • Think of a similar challenge you have paracticed and apply what was learned.

W - Work Together

  • Everyone must participate.
  • Listen to other members' ideas.
  • Decide what is best for the team.

S - Successful Team

  • Combine all of the above and this is the result.

Recruiting Teams

In our last newsletter we discussed ideas for determining interest in the Destination ImagiNation program within your school's student body.  The next step in the process is to recruit teams.  Recruiting teams first involves bringing interested students and parents together to get information on the full program and the time commitment.

Perhaps the easiest way to do this is to host a Destination ImagiNation information night.  This is intended to be a fun and informational  meeting for both students and parents.  Make sure that all of the students who indicated an interest in the program and their parents are invited.  If your school is new to the DI program, invite your regional director or an experienced Team Manager to come and explain the program.  It is important at this meeting to let your interested students and their parents know the following:
